A BRIEF HISTORY OF US

The name Lyceum comes from the ancient Greek "Lykeion", a place of learning about the liberal arts.

The first Lyceum Club was founded in London by writer, journalist and artist, Constance Smedley in 1903
for women writers, artists and musicians. Her initiative was quickly followed in other cities in Europe and in the Southern Hemisphere.

The Lyceum Club is now present in over 60 cities across 17 countries.

The aim of the club is the fostering of friendship amongst women and the development of culture.

The Edinburgh Club is a member of the International Association of Lyceum Clubs.

All members are invited to attend the IALC Congress and Cultural Visits.

The International Association of Lyceum Clubs comprises the National Federation and is run by the International Central Bureau (ICB).

It consists of the International President, two Vice Presidents, one for each hemisphere, Secretary, Treasurer, Archivist and Presidents of the National Federations.

The ICB meets once a year in different venues and administers the Association according to its rules of procedure.

Every three years all Lyceum Club members are invited to attend the International Lyceum Congress to meet and share ideas and to develop a theme of general interest.

The official languages of the Congress are English, French and German.
